"Over the last 25 years the accelerating loss of foundational industries has created a sense of hopelessness and an entitlement culture."

While this statement can refer to many areas of the U.S., the initial focus of the American Spirit Initiative is the rural Appalachian counties of Columbiana, Ohio; Hancock County, West Virginia and Beaver County, Pennsylvania. The shared history of the local communities creates a unique bond in the area where the three states meet, often referred to as the Tri-State Area.

The economic decline has taken people that once were proud of their contributions and created a sense of hopelessness. The children that have the ability and means leave the Tri-State to find opportunity elsewhere since the best career option in this area is now Wal-Mart.

Once vibrant communities like East Liverpool, Chester and Midland have declining populations, empty store fronts, and deteriorating infrastructures. Hope is in short supply due to these conditions as well as the numerous failed attempts individuals and organizations have made to stop this trend.

The urban centers of Pittsburgh, PA and Youngstown, Ohio are within 50 miles of the Tri-State area. These communities share similar issues and trends. While they are not directly involved in this initiative they certainly will be influencers and indirect beneficiaries in many cases.
